How it works

How does the MiAgua smart water meter work?

We fit our Pulse water meter to your pipe just after your water company's meter, and it counts every litre entering your property. The transmitter at the meter sends those readings to us every hour, and if the numbers cross the limits you set, we message you and anyone else you nominate.

The process

From first call to first alert

Four steps. One visit to the property. Nothing before your supplier's meter is touched.

  1. 1

    Eligibility check

A short call to confirm your town and your meter setup.

We need to know that your supply pipe is accessible after the supplier's meter and that there is mains power within reach of the transmitter. Five minutes on the phone answers both.

  2. 2

    Installation

One visit, typically under two hours.

A technician fits the Pulse water meter on your side of the supplier's meter. Nothing before the meter is touched. Your water is off for a few minutes while the sensor goes in, then back on.

  3. 3

    Connection

The transmitter joins your WiFi. The sensor talks to it by radio.

The sensor does not need WiFi or a phone signal of its own. It sends readings over a low-power radio link to the transmitter, which is the only part that uses your broadband.

  4. 4

    Monitoring

Hourly readings, two thresholds, alerts to whoever you choose.

Readings appear in the app every hour. You set a warning level and an alert level, and nominate who hears about them — you, your keyholder, your property manager, or all three.

The hardware

What actually gets installed

Two pieces of equipment. Both live at the meter.

Pulse water meter

Measures every litre that passes into your property.

  • Fitted after the supplier's meter, on your side of the connection
  • Reads in litres and totalises continuously
  • Connected directly to the Radio Transmitter
MiAgua radio transmitter

Radio transmitter

Carries the readings from the meter niche to the house.

  • Low-power radio — no local WiFi or internet required
  • Battery powered, so a power cut at the house does not stop it recording
  • Sealed for an outdoor meter box

The setup

Where it sits

Water flows left to right. Readings follow the same path, from the pipe to your phone.

The two boxes outlined in blue are ours. Everything to the left of them belongs to your water company and stays exactly as it is.

Alerts

Setting your alerts

Two thresholds, set with you on the day of install and changed whenever you like. The point of two levels is that the second one still means something.

Warning tier

When it fires
Use is higher than normal, but not obviously a fault.
Who hears about it
A message to you only, so nobody is called out at 3am for a long shower.
Typical example
Guests arrived and the pool was topped up. Worth a glance, not worth a plumber.

Alert tier

When it fires
Use crosses the level you agreed as 'this should never happen'.
Who hears about it
You and every contact you nominated — keyholder, manager, neighbour.
Typical example
Continuous flow overnight in an empty villa. Somebody needs to close the stopcock.

The technical questions we get asked

How does the MiAgua smart water meter work?
Our Pulse water meter is fitted to your pipe just after your water company's meter. It counts the water going into your property and sends the readings by radio to the transmitter, which uploads a reading every hour. If the readings cross the limits you set, MiAgua messages you and anyone else you nominate.
Do you touch my water company's meter?
No. Everything we fit sits after the supplier's meter, on your side of the connection. Your official meter and its readings are untouched, so your billing relationship with the water company does not change.
Will my water be turned off during installation?
Only for the few minutes it takes to cut the sensor into the pipe. The technician turns the supply back on before leaving and checks every joint under pressure.
Does the sensor need WiFi or a mobile signal?
The sensor itself does not. It uses a low-power radio link to the transmitter. Only the transmitter uses your WiFi.
Does it need my home wifi?
No home wifi needed, connects directly via the mobile network.
How often are readings taken?
Every hour. That is the difference between finding a leak the same day and finding it on a bill two or three months later.
